    Buying Guide

    Things To Consider

    Digestive Boosts

Hamsters tend to suffer from digestive issues more than any other health problem, and so providing them with a gut-boosting diet can help alleviate or reduce the chances of such problems. Try and find food packed with prebiotics if you’re looking to give your hammy’s tummy an easy time of it!

    Coat & Skin Supplements

Your hamster’s appearance is something you probably take for granted, however their coats can easily become tatty and dull should your pet not be provided with the proper care. Foods containing linseed or any other form of natural omega-3 and 6 acids or oils will be guaranteed to help keep skin and hair supple and smooth!

    Vitamins & Minerals

Just like us humans, vitamins and minerals are vital for the health of hamsters, providing them with nutrients that boost vitality and wellbeing

    Proteins

Hamsters are omnivores and despite a lot of hamster diets mainly consisting of seeds and grain, experts believe they require a diet made up of at least 15% protein. This means you should be looking for foods that promise a small protein hit through meat or other means!

    Complex Carbohydrates

Hamsters burn through carbohydrates at an incredibly fast rate – possibly due to all that wheel running! This means though that they need complex high-energy carbohydrates that are tougher to break down and so last longer. The best way to achieve this is by buying foods with natural vegetable sources and grains.

    Sugar Content

High sugar foods are terrible for a hamster’s health, encouraging obesity, selective feeding and teeth issues. So beware of even mixes with high fruit content!

    Salt Content

Conversely, hamsters actually need more salt than you’d expect as it helps them retain efficient water levels. If you can’t find a food which provides enough consider purchasing a salt lick for their cage.

    Dental Health

Hamsters teeth never stop growing and so sometimes food can be helpful in wearing their teeth down and keeping them to a manageable length. Super soft foods aren’t going to help this!

    Other Buyers Ask...

Nuggets Vs. Mix: Which Is Best For Hamsters?

There is some debate about which food is best for hamsters, as while hamster owners in their millions continue to purchase complete and nutritious muesli mixes, a lot of experts warn against them, instead preferring to promote a pellet/nugget diet with small portions of fruit and vegetables.

The main reason for this is because mixes can occasionally encourage what’s known as selective feeding in hamsters. In the same way a child might leave the broccoli and carrots on their plate during dinner, a hamster can begin to ignore healthy ingredients and simply opt for the sweetest and tastiest part of the meal instead. This is obviously not healthy, and goes completely against the point of the mix which is to provide a balanced diet.

However non-mix nuggets obviously have next to no variety, which can be boring for hamsters, and does not stimulate their natural senses and foraging behaviours.

Personally though, we think that your hamster’s health is the most important thing, and so a pelleted food which contains every nutrient your hamster needs in one mouthful is naturally the most sensible choice!

If you’re considering switching from one to the other, be careful, and make sure the change is done gradually! Hamster’s can become easily ill if their iet suddenly changes overnight and so it’s best to be patient and introduce things slowly!

How Much Should Hamster Food Cost?

Most hamster food shouldn’t cost you anything over £5, unless you are buying a particularly large bag of over 1 Kg!
