    Buying Guide

    Purpose

Perches for indoor birds can be a softer material to keep them occupied and allow their feet to move and exercise. Harder materials, such as calcium, can keep their claws sharpened and filed down, keep their beak in good condition and provide relief for scratching itches.

    Materials

You can choose from woods, rope or plastics. It is good to give them a variety of materials.

Wooden perches will often be straight across horizontal, and rope can usually be round or shaped to give them something different.

Avoid any materials like sandpaper which say they can ‘exfoliate’ their feet – they are too abrasive and can cause injury.

    Size

The size of perch you need will, of course, depend on the size of your bird.

    • X-Small – 1/2″ or less
    • Small – 1/2-5/8″
    • Medium – 3/4-1″
    • Large – 1-1.5″
    • X-Large – 2-2.5″

    Other Buyers Ask...

Why do I need a variety of perches for my bird?

Your pet will spend their entire life standing up, so it is important to get their feet exercised using various shapes and materials. Doing so will prevent any future problems in their feet forming, and they won’t get tired of standing on the same spot all the time.

This is why they come in so many shapes and sizes, with materials from rope to wood.

How many perches do I need?

Obviously, give them a variety. But don’t cram it with perches, as they still need room to stretch their wings.

Calculate how many will comfortably fit into their cage before buying. Their wings shouldn’t touch a perch when they are stretched out, which should give you an idea of where you can place them.
