Hot Tips

Healthcare for your pet starts in the home. That's where you live, and where your dog or cat lives too, so it's important to get things right, back at base. The fundamentals include routine inoculations regular worming and flea control, an appropriate diet, avoiding problems connected with breeding, and maintaining good behaviour. Get all of these right, and things will be off to a good start.

TIP FOR THE WEEK

Worms! What a word that is. It's enough to make you feel sorry for the little blighters! But they're not good news for our pets. Too few dogs and cats are wormed too infrequently, and too ineffectively. Toxocara are roundworms, which can, if rarely, pose a threat to small children. The answer is for ALL of us to worm our dogs and cats every 3 months throughout their lives. Some animals are prone to tapeworms, especially if they are rodent hunters, and this must be considered too. In the UK, I find a very simple approach to worming is to use PANACUR sachets. These are little sachets of powder, which you mix in with some tasty food. And down it goes. Most dogs and cats find it very acceptable, and the Fenbendazole constituent disposes of both roundworms and tapeworms in one go!! They're available form your vet, in sachets, sized to match the weight of your pet.
