The Pet Travel Scheme

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) will finally allow dogs and cats to travel abroad, and return to the UK without quarantine…..subject to VERY STRINGENT CRITERIA. The scheme starts on 28th February 2000, and the details are now available. The official MAFF site gives the information on the following link:

http://www.maff.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm and you can also find some very helpful tips on the use of the scheme at http://www.ledogstop.com/ledogstop/pets.html This site gives some useful contacts on the other side of the channel.

***STOP PRESS WARNING***

There has already been a reported case of Babesia Canis in a dog which travelled from England to France and back under the PETS scheme. This is a blood borne parasite, spread by ticks, and the infection is potentially fatal. Indeed the dog involved sadly died.

Legislation requires you to treat the pet within 48 hours of RETURNING to the UK with an anti tapeworm and an anti-tick treatment such as "Frontline" to prevent ticks entering the UK.

OUR ADVICE is to ALSO treat the pet BEFORE YOU LEAVE THE UK. Only by doing this will you help to avoid a repeat of the tragic situation which we describe above.
