Sue and Ian Sands of Leicester spent a relaxing 2 weeks in Gran Canaria and sent us these pictures of the feral cat population of the island. Gran Canaria is situated to the west of Africa and enjoys a temperature that never falls below 15 ° C. Cats were originally taken to the island by the local population but inevitably some cats decided to go it alone. The climate and the continuous flow of generous tourists mean that these cats have been able to breed and now are becoming a pest. Fortunately plenty of help is at hand. People like Koen Troubleyn, a Swiss national who lives on the island collects money from tourists for the cats. "The money is used to buy food and have the males neutered. This ensures that the population does not get out of hand and that more drastic measures taken. Each cat that is neutered has a corner of their ear clipped so we know who is and who isn't". ![]() The food is lowered to the cats by using small buckets attached to lengths of string.
Koen talking to a tourist about the cats, and the cats happily eating the food he supplies. ![]() One happy Cat!
